Name: Enhance citizen engagement in societal issues through creative documentary cinema

Donor: East-West Management Institute Civil Society Engagement Program

Duration: March 1, 2024 – February 28, 2025

Amount granted: USD 29 797

Goal and objectives: The goal of the project is to use new ways of citizen engagement, with a special emphasis on creative documentary film as a powerful and interesting means of raising public awareness and participation. Documentary film is an important medium that conveys an in-depth, content-laden story that can be the basis for asking questions, sharing knowledge, motivating, thinking, rethinking, and social change. Nevertheless, awareness of documentary cinema as a media medium is low both among Georgian viewers and civil society organizations working in the field of media freedom. It is necessary to take gradual and structural steps not only to maintain the independence and further development ofGeorgian cinema, but also to popularize cinema as a way of expression, exchange of ideas and raising awareness on various issues. To achieve these goals, the Documentary CinemaAssociation (DOCA) will work in several directions: (i) strengthening of sectoral cooperation and development/implementation of strategic documents; (ii) Advocacy campaign on the needs and possibilities of documentary film as a media medium and, most importantly, (iii) Raising public awareness through documentary film and creating a space for discussion on various pressing issues.
